Gathering at SCCC to call for peace
Students join with new community group

MATT VOLKE, Gazette Reporter

Traffic rumbled by Schenectady County Community College but didn't drown the voices of those singing on the steps of Elston Hall on Thursday afternoon. A group of about 30 gathered for the cause of peace. Neighbors, students and faculty organized the event to protest the ongoing Iraq war and highlight the need for peace.

"It's a holiday season, and it's a time of peace," said Derek Holman, an official in the college's student government. "Peace should be across the world. I believe our troops should come home."

Members of the newly formed city group Neighbors for Peace joined members of the Student Government Association and staff in organizing the event. Anita Paul, one of the founders of Neighbors for Peace, said it was the first time since the group started in September that they worked with students.

People held signs and candles. Several lanterns were lit on the steps of Elston Hall, which faces the entrance to Interstate 890.

Martha Asselin, an event organizer and associate dean for student services, said students were asking for this type of event.

"We need to remember those in war," she said. "We want people to realize that even though we're all different, we have a common bond -- peace, this common thing that binds us together this time of year, no matter what your beliefs."
