SCHENECTADY
NEIGHBORS FOR PEACE MINUTES AUGUST 13, 2007
Members present: Elizabeth V., Mabel L., Pete
L. Elaine K., Dave G., Anita P.
Facilitator: Mabel
Elizabeth called for attention
to the need for publicity help. We have been without a publicity coordinator
for 3 months. Mabel suggested handling it per event.
Discussion of previous actions and events.
-
Elizabeth: Summer Night
Vigil in downtown Schenectady – lots of people – good visibility and
turnout.
-
Pete: suggestion to evaluate successes of
various events for learning and planning.
-
Elizabeth: regular weekly
vigils still occurring.
-
Hiroshima/Nagasaki memorial in central
Park – good turn out of demonstrators and good program- limited number
of passersby. Malcolm coordinated the program and kept a model to go by
for future. He did publicity and will create a media list.
-
Mabel requested that all of us receive the
publicity list.
-
Pete: check for Peace Action’s media list
– could be used as a core.
-
Elaine: Crane making workshop – 9 people
total – positive outcomes – cranes were effectively used for Nagasaki
memorial and can be made for future events.
-
Elizabeth: attended Upper
Hudson Peace Action Steering Committee – some Iran – no war planning –
leaflet available against war with Iran
-
Mabel – discussion of vigils by WAW and
Grannies at Albany Food Fair- news contact with Dennis Yusko who covers
Saratoga for the Times Union. He is especially sympathetic and
interested in covering anything having to do with the plight of
returning veterans.
-
Elaine – discussion of depleted uranium
issue and Jim Tedisco not yet appointing scientist for implementing the
Military Toxins law. Some discussion of our group taking action on this.
-
Elaine- book signing event for Larry
Whittner’s book about Peace Action’s history – well attended. Will bring
some money for Peace Action in New York State.
-
Elizabeth – meeting with
Gillibrand and various peace groups. Gillibrand said to continue
advocacy and step up lobbying. She relies on information from groups.
Her stance is no money for oil. She said first speak with her, and then
send literature. She is willing to do telephone conferences.
Treasurer’s Report- Dave: We have $218. We will contribute $25 to church
for our meeting space.
