SCHENECTADY NEIGHBORS FOR PEACE MINUTES
MAY 14, 2007
 

Maxine Borom chaired the meeting. 

Several new people were welcomed to the group. 

The meeting began with members recounting the various peace related events that they
had participated in, or attended, which included: 
  • Step it Up Rally to fight Global Warming, April 14 from Liberty Park to City Hall,
  • Scott Ritter’s talk “The Crisis in U.S. - Iran relations on April 24 at the Sanctuary
    for Independent Media, Veto Rally at Wolf Rd. May 2, 
  • OngoingTruth in Recruitment leafleting at Schenectady High, 
  • Roving peace vigil on April 28 at Altamont and Chrysler,
  •  Grannies for Peace silent gathering for peace at the Albany Tulip festival on May 12,
  • The Occupation Project’s protest in the lobby of the Federal Building May 14,
  • Ongoing peace vigils Tuesdays 5 PM United Methodist Church, Fridays 11 PM,
    corner Jay and Liberty.
 
Discussion of members planning to participate in: 
  • “Missing Peace” art exhibit atWomen’s Building in Albany (Mabel Leon), 
  • Upper Hudson Peace Action’s pot luck meeting for the branch’s coordinating and
    sharing information and events (Elizabeth)
  • Kids Day (Maxine and Elaine organizing).
 
Discussion of:
  • roving vigil locations,
  • cooperating with Amnesty group at Schenectady High, 
  • current events regarding preventing war in Iran,
  •  counter-recruitment activities,
  • planning for Hiroshima Day 1st week in August (new committee headed by Malcolm Wilson), 
  • upcoming films (chaired by Terry Roben).
  
Upcoming Events

NISKA-DAY PARADE:  Sat. May 19  Parade begins at 10 am with Niskayuna Neighbors for Peace at 1057 Cornelius Ave.

SCOTIA MEMORIAL DAY PARADE:  Wed. May 23  Rally at 5:30 pm - - parade is at 6:15 pm.  This will be a silent, respectful vigil.

ALBANY MEMORIAL DAY PARADE:  Mon. 28, Meet at Ontario and Central at 9:30.  We will march with Veterans for Peace.  Parade starts at 10 am.

Kids’ Day event on Jay Street 12-4. Peace crafts for kids, and tabling.

BALLSTON LAKE / BURNT HILLS  FLAG DAY:  Thursday,  June 7,  Rt. 50 and Lake Hill intersection.  Arrive by 6:30 pm to park at either at Burnt Hills Lanes on Rt 50 or BH-BL High School and walk to line up on Lake Hill Rd and Rt 50 (Pete thinks).  March will begin at 7:00.  Look for earth and peace flags.  Call Pete for more info: 399-2080.

Schenectady Neighbors for Peace film series,  Schenectady Main Public Library, Liberty St., Tues, June 5th, at 6:00.  “Stealing America - Electronic Voting Machines” and discussion.

SNP JUNE ROVING VIGIL will join the GLBT peace activist community at 11:00 on  at BLOWN AWAY, a Jessica Michael Salon, 1716 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12309 Saturday, June 9, 11:30- 12:30  at the Upper Union St. Strawberry Festival

Concert:“ Devotional and Peace Songs from Jerusalem” with Israeli
Singer, Miriam Ohevetel-Iron, Sunday, June 10th at 7p.m.
